The Cold War is dead and over . But new enemies have risen. Jonathan Pine , a former soldier, working as a Night Manager in Swiss hotel finds himself caught in the middle of events not of his choosing . British Intelligence wants him to spy on a notorious arms dealer and Pine is the poking stick that they want to use to see which way the ants run . Except that this time the ants dont run and they run up the poking stick to bite the hands that hold them. Its all there - the moral degradation of the world in general , self doubts of the hero while watching Desert Storm unfold on the TV screens, the ruthless self serving nature of intelligence operations . Its almost as if Le Carre is out to demolish the very mythical qualities of the intelligence world , that he has built in his past novels about upright but flawed heroes of the Smiley variety. The villains look and sound more attractive as human characters , as compared to the past cold War novels. In this case its a ruthless arms dealer Roper who believes that Bonga Bonga is fighting Conga Conga ? Give arms to both. Thats my policy (Or words to that effect ). Pine is of course caught from all sides in this mess as he runs with the criminals and hunts with the spies. Only question ? who is the criminal and who is the spy ? When I read it first , I was sorely disappointed. I was of course expecting yet another classic cold War novel. But this book captures the essence of the post COld War world as intelligence agencies retarget their sights on new and emerging threats - very pompous and not what its cracked up to be . The cost is of course in terms of the human chess pieces that are piled on a board . The NIght Manager is NOT a great story in the classic le Carre tradition but it tries to fit in reasonably in the post Cold War world . And that is probably its biggest strength .
