The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) on Tuesday called off its seven months strike following a meeting between the union and other stakeholders in Abuja. The President of COEASU, Dr Emmanuel Asagha, who confirmed the development to newsmen, said the union took the decision as part of resolutions reached at the end of the meeting. The Chairman of Committee of Council of Colleges of Education (COEs), Sen. Emma Anosike, hailed the unions decision to call off the strike. Anosike said all the resolutions adopted at the end of the meeting would be implemented with a view to addressing the challenges in the sector. The chairman before the resolution had appealed to the striking lecturers to give government the benefit of doubt to resolve the issues by calling off the strike. He said that since government had gone far in the implementation of issues that led to the seven months strike, the committee would do all within its powers to take care of the gray areas. ``We want to appeal to you to please consider our request and call off the strike. We appreciate your concern and struggle to improve the standard of the sector which is commendable. ``We want to pick up the fight from where you stopped. We as politicians will open those doors you cannot open and solve those issues you cannot resolve, Anosike said. Anosike also pledged the committees commitment to ensure that lecturers returned to class without any fear of victimisation. Also, the Director of Tertiary Education in the ministry, Mrs Hindatu Abdullahi, called on the union to consider governments commitment and desire to resolving all the issues it raised. Abdullahi, who expressed appreciation over the efforts of the union to better the lot of teachers in the country, urged COEASU to reconsider its stance and end the strike. ``I believe with understanding of each other motives, nothing will be impossible,’’ Abdullahi said. The Executive Secretary, National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), Prof. Mohammed Junaid, said that a lot had been achieved in the seven months struggle. According to him, it is just a matter of time before all the issues are taken care of. ``I believe we have played the struggle to full time. Where we are currently is extra time, so let us consider all efforts and call off the strike. In his response, Asagha said the union was left with no choice than to embark on the strike since the sector had suffered a lot of discrimination in the hands of different administrations.
