The Cult – Lil’ Devil, Alternative US Art & B-Side The second single from Cult’s “Electric” LP was “Lil’ Devil” and it was one of their biggest hits. It came in a variety of formats in various countries and featured some rather good live recordings of several tracks as b-sides. In the USA though, only 2 tracks graced the release. Promo 7” & 12”’s just had “Lil’ Devil” on both sides. More interesting is the commercial 7” which featured completely different artwork to the design that was used in the rest of the world and a different B-Side. The original sleeve design is more in keeping with art used on the “Electric” LP and singles but the USA 7” replaces the reptile with a very cartoony devil coming out of what looks the the Warner Bros. logo! Not sure what the band thought about this one, I wouldn’t be surprised if they weren’t consulted about it though. As is common on a lot of US singles, another track from the LP was used as the b-side. The last track from “Electric”, “Memphis Hip Shake” was chosen at the expense of the brilliant “Zap City” which graced the flip of other worldwide releases. US fans wanting this b-side and the various live tracks therefore had to turn to Canadian or UK pressings to get all these extra goodies. Two videos were made for Lil’ Devil, the one that was shown in the UK is to a slightly different mix of the song which I don’t think is available on any release. You can see that one here: https://youtube/watch?v=O1vorrHCJUI The other video which looks like it was more for the American market and is to the single/LP mix can be seen here: https://youtube/watch?v=5EOFktcAxfI Listen to the USA 7” B-Side “Memphis Hip Shake” here: https://youtube/watch?v=n6zIx9A62T4 Listen to the UK B-Side “Zap City” here: https://youtube/watch?v=dD5YvgSIRfM
