The Diary of Iris Vaughan I thought you might like to know - TopicsExpress

The Diary of Iris Vaughan I thought you might like to know something about Iris Mom, Patty Vaughan (1867-1947). She was born Martha Margaretha Ackermann, the 9th child of Christiaan Theodorus (from whom Iris brother Charles got his middle name) Ackermann and his wife Hendrika (from whom Iris got her middle name Henriette) Jacoba Elisabeth Reinhardt of Hanover. Throughout the Diary she is referred to as Patty, not Martha. When her and Cecils youngest child, Patrice Einon Vaughan, was born, her own name was recorded in the baptism register as Patrice Margaret Vaughan. So Patty was obviously a nickname derived from Patrice, but how she came by it I do not know. She must have met Cecil Vaughan when he was working as a clerk in the magistrates court in Hanover in 1888. That was also the year that Cecil was selected to play cricket for Western Province against a touring English team. One of Pattys brothers, Hendrik Ackermann, married Susannah Viljoen and inherited the Viljoen farm, Thomasgat, in Richmond. There is some evidence in Iris Diary, and in the second book These were my Yesterdays, that Iris visited the farm with her mother, while Cecil took his annual leave in Cape Town. Today the farm is owned by Hendriks great-grandson, also called Hendrik Ackermann. He is a well-known sheep farmer in the district. The house depicted below is Thomasgat: as it was then and as it is now. Merriman is the nearest railway siding.
