The Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Ibrahim Attahiru yesterday said a total of 3,000 soldiers are in attending essential counterterrorism training in four army schools across the country. The director made the remarks at the monthly media briefing in Abuja. “The 69 Regular Recruits that passed out are reporting for further counterterrorism training in four different training institutions. “The soldiers training which is expected to last for six weeks covers house breaking and clearing, urban patrol, unarmed combat, skill at arms, international humanitarian laws amongst others.” He said the army has reviewed its recruitment procedure to include pre-screening examination for soldiers’ recruitment. “In this regard, the army has procured new marking machines to enhance the recruitment exercise. “The machine will be put to use nationwide for the first time during the 70 Regular Recruitment Intake examinations,” he explained saying the pre-screening exercise is aimed at selecting the best personnel. He said the attention of the army headquarters had been drawn to an impostor, Yahaya Shinko who claimed to be a retired Major. “He has been parading himself as a retired Major and security experts in some international media. “He had also been discussing the ongoing state of emergency and the military operations in the north-eastern part of the country with some selected international media. “Please be informed that the officer was reduced to Second Lieutenant on disciplinary ground for Absent Without Official Leave (AWOL) and was subsequently retired from service in 1999 for service no longer required. “Judging from the circumstances under which the officer left the service, no in-depth analysis and sound judgment on any military operations could come out from such an inexperienced officer,” the director revealed. He said the ban on use and sale of Nigerian Army stickers, banners and other military accoutrements is still in force.
