(但是，我看，好像從來沒有人能脫離這裡……) 這首歌到底要表達什麼？在網路上，曾看到三種不同的解釋，可能是：1) 描述美國富人的奢侈，2) Eagles表達對美國音樂工業的不滿，3) 這只是Eagles吃了藥，在幻覺下，隨機作出來的一首歌，歌詞本身不具任何意義。 本翻譯採用的是第2種解釋。有網友分享，他在大學時的英文課，教授曾經拿了這首歌的歌詞給學生，請學生寫下『他們認為這首歌，到底在表達什麼？』。因為這首歌裡面的很多事物，乍看之下並沒有關聯。比方說，加州旅館代表什麼？為什麼會是1969年？多半的學生都認為這首歌，應該是和墮落靡爛的演藝圈生活有關。 最後，這位教授講解歌詞，其實是Eagles表達當年對音樂工業的不滿。加州旅館指的是洛杉磯，也就是他們錄唱片的地方。1969年，洛杉磯曾發生歌手與唱片公司衝突，接著很多歌手離開當地的唱片公司。這位教授自稱是Eagles的鼓手，Don Henley，的朋友。這首歌的緣由，也是由Don Henley親口向他解釋。
