The East Alton Fire Department regretfully announces the passing of Retired Fire Chief Randall “Randy” Mortland. Chief Mortland honorably served the citizens of the Village of East Alton for 35 years as a Paid On Call, Engineer, Lieutenant, Captain, and in 2006 he was promoted to Fire Chief where he served until his retirement 11/1/2012. Chief Mortland lost his battle with cancer at his home Saturday 8/24/2013 at @ 1600 hours. His last few months were spent fighting this horrible disease with the same fervor and passion he served his department and his community with for so many years. He is survived by his wife Debbie, Son Engineer Andrew “Drew” Mortland, his wife Laurie, and their expectant child, and his two beloved Basset Hounds, Otis and Ellie. Arrangements are as follows: Visitation will be at Pitchford Funeral Home at 2555 Vaughn Rd. in wood River, IL Fri. Aug. 30, 2013 from 1300 hours until 2000 hrs. There will be a uniformed walk through at 1900 hours and all personnel wishing to participate in the walk through should be at the funeral home by 1830. Funeral services will be held at the East Alton Middle School gymnasium at 1000 Third St. East Alton, IL at 1000 hours on Sat. Aug. 31, 2013. With the funeral precession escorting Chief Mortland to Roselawn Cemetery in Bethalto, IL to his final resting place. Apparatus wishing to participate in the precession should report to the staging area on Vernon St. in East Alton by 0900 hours. Any departments wishing to honor Chief Mortland by placing apparatus in the precession should notify the EAFD by phone 618-259-2984 by Thursday afternoon if possible. There will be a dinner immediately following at Julias Banquet Center in East Alton immediately following the services and all fire fighters participating in the funeral and procession have been invited by the family to attend.
