The Embassy of Switzerland has awarded a travel grant to a young woman from a Washington D.C. public school to encourage more girls to pursue careers in science and research. Shaneice Childs, winner of the award, is now travelling with a guardian across Switzerland to visit top scientific institutions. Have a look at Shaneice’s exciting schedule in Switzerland: July 1 Meeting with women scientists at the MeteoSuisse national weather service, and at the World Meteorological Organization in Geneva July 2 Visit of the CERN, in Geneva July 3 Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne The Reconfigurable Robotics Lab, the Rolex Learning Center, and Henry Markram’s Blue Brain Lab July 4 Oeschger Centre at the University of Bern 4th of July Independence Day Celebration at the U.S. Embassy in Bern July 5 Visit of the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETHZ) July 6 Helicopter flight to the solar powered Monte Rosa Hut research facility 10,000+ meters in the mountains The contest was open to all female students in 9th to 12th grade in Washington D.C. who participated in the District of Columbia Middle and High School STEM Fair held on March 23, 2013. Contestants were asked to write an essay to answer the question, “If you had one week in Switzerland to visit any scientists and science institutions, who and where would you visit?
