I know you all have seen it said a million times today but serious, stop and think about what today really means. With that out of the way here is a fun little story for you all.... I love The Dropkick Murphys, sure they fall on the more pop punk side of what I like but you cant deny they can write some catchy tunes. The album The Warriors Code was on a loop for sometime when I first got it. I loved pretty much every track on CD but never bothered to learn any of the names. One of my favorite tracks near the end of the disk was a blazing fast, pop punk, anthem of a song that I never could really make out the lyrics to. One day I was sitting at a red light and tuned into the lyrics a little more than usual. Thats when I started to take notice of the fact there was some pretty heavy things being said. I took a look at the back of CD case and saw the track is titled Last Letter Home. So I realized it was war/military related but when I got home and dug a little deeper I saw just how much this band kicks ass. So the story goes like this. USMC Sgt. Andrew Farrar was a fan of the Dropkick Murphys and was serving in the Al-Anbar province of Iraq. In a care package his mother had sent was the album Blackout which included the song Fields of Athenry. He wrote home saying thanks and how much he loved that song, he also stated he wanted it played at his funeral when the time comes. As you all probably guessed Sgt. Farrar unfortunately had that wish granted much too soon. He was killed shortly after on January 28th 2005. When the band was notified of this they were obviously deeply affected. They wrote the song using excerpts from letter he and his loved ones had written to each other while he was overseas, they even included his name and the date of his death. The band them took it to the next level by releasing the song a single and giving all profit to Sgt. Farrars family. Finally, just to take it one step further they even fulfilled his final wish by having Scruffy Wallace (The bands bagpipe player) attend his funeral and play Fields of Athenry as his casket was lowered. So the Dropkick Murphys are total winners in my book. They continue to be major supporters of the armed forces as well as charity workers. So to Sgt. Farrar and all those who have served, are currently serving, or have paid the ultimate price for freedom, this ones for you. youtube/watch?v=bh7adunD0VU
