The Estragon on Khao Noi (Darkside) has been reviewed here a few times before, but for the benefit of new members well do it one more time :) Run by Laurent from France who has many years as a chef behind him, having worked in and run restaurants all over the world, the Estragon is a little bit different. Yes you can go and eat there, but its main selling point is classic French home cooking, pre-cooked and vacuum packed, to be taken home and eaten at your leisure. Believe me, its delicious. He supplies a number of restaurants around town who for obvious reasons want to remain anonymous. It is classic fare, the kind a French mum prepares, from beef bourguignon, to coq au vin, to lamb stew, and plenty more. All are slow cooked, and the vacuum packing actually enhances the flavour, as the meats absorb the aromas over time - Laurent says the packages can be kept in the meat section of a good fridge for up to ten days. Ok, this wont be of great interest to people holidaying in Pattaya, but its ideal for expats who want a change from eating out and love quality dishes that couldnt be simpler to prepare. Prices? Ranging from the mid-100s to about 300 baht (the beef bourguignon, my favourite, is 225 baht). Preparation? Put the package for a couple of minutes in the microwave, or a little bit longer in a pan of simmering water. With rice or fries, from fridge to plate in less than ten minutes. And what quality. The Estragon closes from about lunchtime on a Sunday, otherwise its open from about 8am til late. Drop by and enjoy a French breakfast sometime while you choose your take-away dishes - his croissants and chocolate breads, freshly baked, are delicious too.
