The Fiji Government has written to the Citizens Constitution Forum asking that it immediately withdraw its booklet which Government says is “misleading, damaging and full of lies.” That was the description by Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum as he slammed the CCF for distributing a booklet on the 2013 Constitution which he says contains a number of basic factual errors. Government says it will also be writing to the CCF’s major donors. The Attorney General also highliting several errors such as the compulsory acquisition of land as misleading. “What is even more damaging about this particular page is that the CCF fails to mention the new provision in the 2013 Constitution that if the state no longer requires that land for public purposes then it must give back that land and the CCF has failed to mention that,” he says. He described this as a deliberate attempt to cause disquiet amongst landowners. “As has been highlited in a number of ocassions in the lead up to elections, that people must represent the facts as they are. Whose flag are they flying? Can you say the CCF is impartial as they always hold themselves out to be as other NGO’s? What is their agenda?” said Sayed-Khaiyum. Descriptions in the booklet over the judiciary also slammed by Government. “Its a great travesty not just of justice buta great travesty of what this booklet is doing and what this organisation is doing. They are being funded by foreign governments and they are going down to the grassroots people and spreading them misinformation and spreading lies and they are telling them untruths under the banner of supposedly an impartial civil society organisation which is waging propaganda,” he told journalists in a Sunday press conference. Government will now write to the CCF demanding that it immediately withdraws the publication.
