The First Synod Occidental since 1054 Met Saturday, November 22, 2014 Feast of St. Cecilia, virgin and martyr in Rome († 230) 1054 marks the break between Rome and Constantinople. Rome will take the name of the Roman Catholic Church. Constantinople will take the name of Orthodox Church with a suite of national Orthodox churches. Two ecclesiologies are formed: - The Roman Catholic Church based on the text You are Peter and on this rock I will build my church .... - The Orthodox Church based on the text: Go and teach all nations .... Not until the twentieth century, with the meeting of Pope Paul VI in Jerusalem and Patriarch Athenagoras, for the lifting of the mutual excommunications and the resumption of dialogue between Catholics and Orthodox. In the twentieth century, following problems related to communism, Patriarch Sergius of Moscow, then locum tenens, issues a decree (Decree of 16 June 1936) in which appears for the first time the concept Western Orthodoxy. This legitimate Decree (of fact and law) sets up the proper Western Orthodoxy. Thats decree refers Western Orthodoxy in its legitimacy, its structure and functioning. Bishop Winneart, a French will be the first messenger of Western Orthodoxy. Bishop Kovalevsky will be the largest prime contractor with the restoration of a Western Rite Liturgy (Liturgy of St Germain in Paris) and the establishment of a full liturgical cycle. Today, Western Orthodoxy in France consists of five ecclesial entities: The Orthodox Catholic Church of France (1 bishop); The Orthodox Church French (1 Bishop) The Church of Gaul (1 bishop); The Celtic Orthodox Church (2 bishops); the Church of France (8 bishops). The Orthodox Church is organized by local synods. Since 1054, no local Orthodox synod was held in France. This is the first time since 1054, that stands a local Orthodox synod in France. Now cleavage is simple. On the one hand the Orthodox synods under foreign (Russian, Romanian, Serbian, etc.) On the other side of the Orthodox pertaining to a western local synod, bi-annual, complies with the ecclesiological and canonical principles of the Universal Orthodoxy. 2014 Opening of the first local Western Synod since the breakdown of 1054 Metropolitan Israel has prepared and convened the Holy Synod, which was chaired by Nicolas Patriarch, Primate of the Church of France. At this Holy Synod were invited bishops and representatives of the Orthodox Catholic Church of France, French Orthodox Church, The Church of Gaul, the Celtic Orthodox Church and the Church of France The Primate of France Nicolas placed the work in the context of a founding synod and recasts synod. Why refounder? Because we reconnect with the origins and fundamentals of the early church and college. This collegiality has taken over the centuries and from the outset the form of councils and synods. Thus, the first ecumenical council, Nicaea in 325, is called himself in his actions, the holy and great synod. The prototype is the meeting of the apostles (who were more than eleven only from the treachery of Judas) and disciples in the upper room with Mary and the holy women, the evening of the first day of the week that is to say, the Sunday of the resurrection. Jesus appeared to them and performs three actions that are originating action of the Church: 1) it sends it gave missions them (as the Father has sent); 2) he infuses them the Holy Spirit; 3) it gives them power (divine) to untie and tie (John 20: 19-23). These, we insist the foundation of the Church; Pentecost will be put in motion by the dynamism of the Holy Spirit. So here we have the archetype of the synodal or conciliar Church: the college of the apostles, the largest college of disciples, who, with the holy women symbolize the people; one who presides, is Christ, and that which animates it is the Holy Spirit. The first synod or council was history that meeting described in Chapter 15 of the Acts of the Apostles and the tradition refers to as the Council of Jerusalem or council of the apostles. There was a lively discussion in which participated the apostles and elders and that leads to this conclusion: listen well, the formula is bold: We decided the Holy Spirit and us ... (Acts 15: 28) .dropoff window Enjoy! However, this is a true council or synod: Christ presides and the Holy Spirit inspires. We know that there are in all seven councils truly ecumenical and recognized as such by the Orthodox tradition: the first Council of Nicaea in 325, the first Council of Constantinople in 381, the Council of Ephesus in 431, the Council of Chalcedon in 451, the 2nd Council of Constantinople in 553, the 3rd Council of Constantinople in 681, the second Council of Nicaea in 787. And thats it. Behind these councils? Well, we said: Christ. The hierarch who directs the work is generally the one with a title of honor; but whatever the title Patriarch, primate, Metropolitan Archbishop ... he presides in charity, not in authority: he is one among equals, he has no casting vote. The principle of collegiality is the equality of all. It is also too - consistency is complete - the foundation of Orthodox ecclesiology: gender all churches regardless of their sizes and their seniority. No Church can not take precedence over another. It is recognized five historic cities or patriarchates: Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, Jerusalem, a primacy of honor and not a primacy of jurisdiction. (Note that Rome lost this rule since the schism of 1054). Same for the bishops within the same church; no bishop prevails over any other, no bishop has jurisdiction over the diocese of another. In a council or synod: the goal is harmony, the union of hearts, for the bond of charity, which will lead to a unanimous decision; where the duty of the majority to conciliation efforts to convince the minority, and the duty of the minority to conciliation efforts to be persuaded by the majority. If there is in the end unanimously course, is that the Holy Spirit was able to act. However if the assembly remains divided into two camps, there schism or risk schism and in this case human opinions have prevailed over the action of the Holy Spirit. We must be aware of the fact that for the first time in 960 years (almost a millennium) meets the West a synod in the tradition of orthodoxy, that is to say, the early church. This is where the synod is refounder. But it is also founder in that no churches that claim to Western orthodoxy has Synod, so no one is really complete. It is this lack of complete. Only we, the French, are legitimate to do so. Our Eastern Orthodox brothers who reside in our country can not do, for the simple reason that all these ecclesial entities are growths, extensions of foreign churches and all those hierarchs who, apart from a, are all foreign nationalities belong to their respective synods Churches: Serbian, Romanian, Greek, Russian, Constantinopolitan ... They were a meeting of Orthodox bishops who can canonically be formed in synod. This synod therefore first subject canonically founded the Orthodox Church, the Church of France. We do not claim to do it alone, even though we launched the movement. Thats why we invited all the Churches, from the same source, St. John of Saint Denis, represent all this western orthodoxy that we must announce to the world today. We have invited the project to keep the specifics and equality in decision-making (a church, one vote) and wish with all my heart that we can continue to cooperate in the most appropriate manner possible for the same work, which is to cultivate the vineyard of the Lord. Then the Primate Nicolas invited us to invoke the Holy Spirit the Comforter King of heaven. The work was dense, open and fruitful. Have been put in place various committees: liturgical commission, which checks the proper use of official texts and proper celebration of the liturgy according to Saint Germain of Paris and the Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom, see other liturgies that it gives power to investigate; Canonical Committee which will star review all disciplinary canons and to make a proposal adapted to our times while respecting tradition; secular role legal commission to check all the links with regulatory authorities, under French law; commission education and training, essential in the Church because it is responsible for the technical and practical means of teaching all clerics and made teaching the faithful. Its role extends catechesis PhD in theology; Bioethics Committee, the most important link with the company since it affects all areas of the development of science, including the discoveries and applications in the past 50 years and our human and social future; Committee on interfaith and interreligious relations, classic but no less important, it is the guarantee of our fraternal approach with all Christians and also to all other religions; Communication Commission is the link to the print media, radio, television and it also relates to all means of internal communications, newspapers, emails, websites and blogs, social networks ... .; Finance Committee, the Church is inscribed in the world, which requires him to use the resources of the world whose main concerns the means of financing its places of worship and to meet all the needs of his clergy and of the faithful; Service chaplaincies focused primarily to hospitals, clinics and nursing homes, chaplaincies need to be present in prisons and in education; Some of these commissions are already asleep and feature clerics or lay presidents and will be assisted by experts. In case of necessity and for really important issues beyond the integrity of the Church, the Primate appoint an ecclesiastical discipline committee. The date of the next national synod was set for May 30, 2015, the eve of Pentecost according to the Eastern calendar.
