The Food for You Well Being theme for the month of July is keeping hydrated without all the sugar and calories of commercial drinks. Here are a few recipes for you to try to start you out! Watermelon Sangrita A combination of watermelon and tomato juice, accented with lime and cayenne, makes for a slightly spicy and very cool summertime drink. Makes about 6 cups Ingredients: * 5c seedless watermelon chunks, rind removed, plus several small slices for garnish (about a 2 pound watermelon) * 1 ½ c tomato juice (tomato juice can be very high in sodium and other preservatives, so look for a variety with minimal ingredients and less than 150mg per serving) * 1t cayenne pepper * juice from 1 lime * 1/8t salt To Prepare: 1.Puree watermelon one cup at a time in blender. 2.Mix pureed watermelon with tomato juice, ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper, and lime juice 3.Mix remaining cayenne with salt on a plate 4.Holding the additional watermelon pieces over the plate, sprinkle the cayenne-salt blend over one side of the watermelon. Cut each piece halfway down to fit watermelon piece on the edge of glass for garnish 5.To serve, pour chilled juice into glasses and garnish glass with spicy watermelon slice. Ginger Lime Infusion Infuse still or sparkling water with ginger and lime for a subtle, zero calorie, and refreshing beverage with impressive presentation Makes 8 cups Ingredients * 3-4 inches fresh ginger root, peeled * 3 limes * 8c water To Prepare 1.Thinly slice ginger root and place in large jar or other container 2.Add the juice from two of the limes to the container with ginger 3.Slice the third lime and add to the mixture 4.Pour water over the top and allow to infuse at least 1 hour, preferably over night. Serve cold. Classic Arnold Palmer Iced black tea mixed with lemonade provides a refreshing, lower-calorie beverage that may be known as “half & half” in the Southern United States Makes 6 cups Ingredients * 4 bags of English Breakfast or other black tea * 5 c boiling water * 3T honey * juice from 4 lemons (more lemons if you prefer a beverage with more tartness) and 1 lemon, sliced To Prepare 1.Steep tea bags in boiling water for 5-7 minutes. Add honey (if desired) while tea is still warm and stir to dissolve. Allow to cool. 2.Add lemon juice and lemon slices. Refrigerate until cold.
