The Gathering of the Sons and Daughters of Mother Ireland Jim Yates 2013 Mixed media on board 2.44m x 1.22m (8ft x 4ft) Prints are now available at editionamelie/painting.htm Details of painting This painting is to celebrate and commemorate the Gathering of 2013 The crosses and hills represent the thirty-two counties of Ireland The names on the sky represent those of Irish descent from the four corners of the world. The blue lines in the sky represent the fourteen waves of immigration since the famine of 1845 – 1852 The names on each cross are of those who live or come from the county Each cross is decorated with dots in the county colours they represent. The dots that are surrounded by other dots represent the gathering at a family table Most names are those alive in 2013 The mass of raised dots on the hill represent those who died in the famine There are over 400 names of those lost to suicide and others who died in tragic circumstances The cross, harp and shamrock represent the three most recognizable symbols of Ireland The blue represents peace and neutrality as well as being the ancient colour of Ireland There are twenty-thousand submitted names added to the cross and sky and roughly one million dots that represent other submitted names from famine lists and other sources Names were submitted through email, social media, letters, notes and word of mouth. No names with titles were allowed
