The Gold of Philip II of Macedon When archaeologists entered the unopened tomb of Philip II of Macedon, the father of Alexander the Great, they had no idea of the immense treasure they were about to find. Among the treasures were a solid gold case with the actual bones of Philip II, his gold leaf crown and his breast plates and helmet. The tomb is located at Vergina in the Greek region of Imathia and was discovered on November 8, 1977 by Greek archaeologist Manolis Andronikos. Looking at the gold wreath and the case on the photo, I can hardly believe it—the tomb lay there untouched for millennia and that wreath decorated the head of Philip II.
