The Great Northeastern War was my first SCA event. Each year as it - TopicsExpress

The Great Northeastern War was my first SCA event. Each year as it approaches I find myself musing on the girl who attended that first event and her experiences. She wore a 70s era patterned satin nightgown with angel wing sleeves (with a vaguely medieval silhouette), a red velvet cloak, a long braid, and carried her companions ridiculous claymore everywhere she went. (And very likely a wreath of wildflowers over an unceasing smile of sheer joy.) Surely she looked pretty ridiculous, and there would have been much to critique about her appearance - and her chosen name (ahem, Evangeline)- but not a soul did. Everyone she met was kind, gracious, and gave her good information without hurting her feelings. She never felt out of place even as she admired the beautiful clothing around her. She was offered hospitality and kindness everywhere she went. She didnt know about titles or rules, and just said goodday to everyone she met, no matter what was perched upon their heads. I realize now that she was a true delicate flower of the north -and her spirit could have been crushed by a thoughtless word or a sudden critique- but it never happened because people around her were careful and gentle and encouraging. By the next event a couple weeks later (Pennsic) she was Anelida and had simple, pretty Simplicity pattern garb. She continues to improve -- no, to change and grow in her knowledge of period and the Society. I am glad I think of her every year because I see her in so many people now. I try to live my SCA life well and be someone she would be proud of. I try to be one of those people who said to her welcome! Please, come water and shade with me for a moment. You look lovely, now come and tell me what you want to Be in this place? Thank you Evangeline, I owe you my lasting gratitude. What does your younger, newer SCAdian self tell you to remember? What would they think of you today?
