The HC Citizen Newsletter Edition 444-A September 16, 2013 Breaking News: Keep in your prayers the families of those killed and wounded this morning at the Naval Facility in Washington, D.C. The story is ongoing and there is a hunt for more of the people who caused this attack. Those Running for Office in Henry County The Municipal elections are coming this November 5th. Of course early voting will start much earlier. Now is the time for the people of the four cities in Henry County to learn who the candidates are and what there positions are on various subjects. It is time to learn if they will be conservative minded or liberal minded. Also, on the ballot is the SPLOST IV tax. This is something that will have to be studied before you cast a vote. There are many people who are against the SPLOST again and are tired of the more taxes that continue to bog down their lives. A polling source out of Atlanta puts the vote currently at 51% voting no and 49% voting yes. Keep this in mind as you go to the polls. Over in Hampton they have a race for mayor and four council seats. Chris Moore is currently Mayor and is seeking re-election against Steve Hutchison. Mr. Hutchison is a former councilman who resigned to run for mayor. The two seeking his seat are Zakery Daniel and Frederick DeRuvo. The other council seats all of them at large are as follows: all three incumbents Charles Hearn, Marty Meeks and Mary Ann Mitcham are seeking re-election. Also in the race are Charlton Grant, former councilman Arley Lowe, and Ann Tarpley. In Locust Grove, there are incumbents Keith Boone, Samuel Brown and James Rosser against Donald Dunlap, Jr. and former councilmember Viann Doerr. All three seats are at large positions. Then in McDonough, Mayor Billy Copeland will face Wayne Smith who resigned from his District 3 Council post to run for mayor. Incumbent Rufus Stewart is running unopposed. District II council member Sandra Vincent will be facing Darryl Payton. The at large seats will be sought by incumbent Rufus Amis, Roger Pruitt, Vincent Smith and Swaine Thompson. Of Course in Stockbridge, the appointed mayor Mark Alarcon will run against Vanessa Holiday, Tim Thompson and Houston Nelson III. The council seats are at large positions and those running are the current council members Shirley Dabney who was appointed, long time council member Harold Cochran, Anthony Ford, Lakeisha Gantt, George Hawxhurst, Tonja Meadows, and Bruce Smith, Sr. Take your time and decide which candidate will do the best job not only for you, but for the people as a whole. Here is the article: Miscalculated scores, flawed questions and other errors on standardized tests have become near commonplace in public schools across the country, according to a new investigation by The Atlanta-Journal Constitution. Repeated failures in quality-control measures have allowed mistakes to keep happening even as testing took on a more crucial role for students and teachers, the newspaper found. In some cases, students have been initially denied diplomas or entry into special academic programs because of incorrect scores. The findings expose significant problems in the execution of the landmark No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, which sought to use test scores to hold schools publicly accountable for students’ academic performance. The newspaper has previously reported other problems with standardized testing, exposing widespread cheating in Atlanta Public Schools. A follow-up investigation in 2012 revealed nearly 200 school districts nationwide had high concentrations of suspect scores. In the current year-long investigation, the AJC’s Heather Vogell studied test design, delivery and scoring and reviewed statistical reports on the quality of more than 92,000 test questions given over two years to students in 42 states and Washington, D.C. The investigation revealed that almost one in 10 tests nationwide contained significant blocks of questions that were likely flawed. Such questions made up 10 percent or more of those tests — threatening their overall quality and raising questions about fairness. “I think that’s just the bottom line,” said Matthew Johnson, a professor at Teachers College in New York City who advised the AJC on this project. In some states, he said, “there is no quality control, or very little.” ……………………………………………………………………………………………..
