The Honors Program at Briar Cliff University is excited to announce the creation of the Honors Program Lecture Series. Our inaugural event will be a Last Lecture, featuring two of Briar Cliff’s favorite (and unfortunately departing) professors: Dr. Will Prigge and Dr. Carlos Vargas-Salgado. Dr. Prigge’s presentation, “Russians, Russification and Latvia’s Historiography,” raises an important question: Is history really about the past? Prigge’s presentation will focus on the history of Russians in Latvia and how they came to find themselves there. On another level, it will examine the issue of Russification in the historiography of Latvia. Dr. Vargas-Salgado’s presentation, “Street Performers Do Have a Sense of Humor: Violence and Politics in Peruvian Popular Theatre During an Internal War,” analyzes the satire and parody resources deployed both in the independent play A ver un Aplauso! by Cesar De Maria and in the comic monologues of street performers in Lima, Peru by the end of 80´s. This year’s lecture series will be held in the Clare Room of the Saint Francis Center on Wednesday, April 30th at 7pm. Please join us in celebrating the Briar Cliff Honors Program and our esteemed faculty scholars. Free and open to the public.
