The Illustrated Weekly and the Illustrious Man We grew-up in - TopicsExpress

The Illustrated Weekly and the Illustrious Man We grew-up in the age where magazines were integral part of our life. In the era where TV (B&W) was available only at Delhi and Mumbai, internet and personal computers were yet to arrive; the magazines were mainstay of infotainment. Growing-up would have been incomplete but for magazines like Illustrated Weekly of India, Dharmyug, Saptahik Hindustan and many more which are extinct now. Amongst English magazines, Illustrated Weekly of India was the most common and widely circulated. It became synonymous with Khushwant Singh who multiplied circulation during his nine years stint till 1979. His editorial articles published under “with malice toward one and all” were indeed the most readable and quite often controversial too. When new weekly used to reach in hand, one used to read through his column first before touching other pages. The cartoon image of a turban clad man sitting inside a light bulb was so familiar. Weekly died a slow death eventually, not sure if it would have survived had Khushwant continued. He went on to write a lot more, many books published including (in) famous joke books or serious stories from Pakistan. However when you take his name, first recall is “Illustrated Weekly”. Just short of his century in 2015, Khushwant Singh passed away today. While Illustrated Weekly died much earlier, its illustrious editor lived till 99 and will remain live ever after by his work. RIP Khushwant Singh Rishikesh
