The Italian artist and prominent architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini - TopicsExpress

The Italian artist and prominent architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini was born in Naples on the 7th of December 1598. He was the leading sculptor of his age, credited with creating the Baroque style of sculpture and for his skill in manipulating marble was considered a worthy successor of Michelangelo. He possessed the ability to depict dramatic narratives with characters showing intense psychological states, and to organize large-scale sculptural works which conveyed a magnificent grandeur. Bernini’s most notable creation was the piazza leading to St Peters. Previously a broad, unstructured space, Bernini created two massive semi-circular colonnades, each row of which was formed of four white columns, which resulted in an oval shape that formed a spectacular, inclusive arena, an exhilarating expanse that was, architecturally, an unequivocal success.
