The Janus Key is a device containing a complete catalogue of every piece of Forerunner technology in the Galaxy. The Janus Key was created to track and offer real-time locations for every piece of Forerunner technology within the Forerunner empire. The name Janus is most likely a reference to the Roman god Janus, the god of portals and gates. The Janus Key was given to Dr Halsey by the Librarian on requiem through the Librarians shrine, but upon exiting, Jul Mdama took one half of the key, not knowing that there was two pieces, while the other half was given to friendly Spartan IV forces. It is speculated that the since the two pieces are colored differently, they hold the location different types of Forerunner artifacts. The Orange piece that was given to the Spartan IVs, is thought to hold military technology, due to the orange color being the same as the Didacts armor, ship, and such. The Blue piece that Jul Mdams took, is thought to hold more civilian technology on it, due to the Librarian blue color theme. This theory is also backed by the color of the light on both pieces, that give it almost a Yin Yang feel, something often seen with the Librarian and Didact. This would give Humans the tactical edge if they found a way to get half of the key working, but its very unlikely since the key was built only to work with both pieces. Although, this is all speculation. If Humanity is able to retrieve the other piece of the Janus key, it is likely they will soon after be able to become a Tier 1 Civilization, and take on the Mantle.
