Saia, Executive Director Dear Readers: On July 11, 2014, Governor Hassan signed into law HB1635, which emanated as a result of the settlement between the Federal and State Government and those citizens of New Hampshire with mental illness. We applaud and thank the Governor in her efforts with the implementation of this bipartisan piece of legislation, which seeks to strengthen and better our system of mental health care. Additionally, we extend our thanks to the legislators, advocates and other interested parties for their work in this law. With Best Regards, Chuck Saia Legislative Wrap Up As the New Hampshire legislative session wraps up here are some bills pertaining to people with disabilities. For more information on the bills please go to gencourt.state.nh.us/bill_status/quick_search.html HB1174: Bill to establish a commission to identify and recommend changes to New Hampshire laws and rules on the payment of subminimum wages to persons with disabilities. HB1568: This bill will make it a crime to impersonate a person with a disability in order to receive a service animal. SB396: This bill will place stricter limits upon the use of restraint practices against children, especially children with disabilities, and will call for a timelier reporting of any incident to parents. Disaster Preparedness Conference On June 11, 2014 the GCD, the New England ADA Center, and Statewide Independent Living Council (SILC) presented at the New Hampshire Emergency Preparedness Conference. The conference had over 600 attendees. The goal of the conference was to “promote and strengthen interdisciplinary partnerships to increase New Hampshire’s ability to mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from all hazards.” In addition to the presentation the GCD had an exhibitor table. The GCD Accessibility Specialist staffed the GCD table answering questions and providing additional information and resources on accessibility. Information on: Person First Language, Service Dogs, the Client Assistance Program (CAP), the NH Telecommunications Equipment Distribution Program, SILC was provided. To go along with the presentations a Resource Guide was developed, and distributed during the presentation and at the exhibitor table.
