The KC Royals in a crucial series with Detroit, take a very disappointing loss, 4-1 on Thursday. Friday brings a day-night double header for the ages. The Royals sweep the double header, winning the first game 2-1 on a very strong 6-inning performance by Danny Duffy (beating Justin Verlander), allowing ONLY 1 hit, no runs, walked 3 and struck out 3. Kelvin Herrera pitched a scoreless 7th inning. Detroit only had 2 hits in the game, the second being a solo home run in the 8th inning off Aaron Crow. Greg Holland got his 33rd save (26th in a row) getting a strikeout, allowing a walk and getting a double play to end it. Eric Hosmer hit his 13th home run in the 4th inning. The second game brought more of the same with James Shields on the mound against Jose Alvarez. Shields evens his record at 8-8, going 7 innings, allowing 3 hits, 4 walks, a hit batter, and 1 strikeout (7th inning), against the best offensive team in the American League. The Royals won 3-0. The Tigers had only one runner reach 2nd base after the 3rd inning. Luke Hochevar pitched a scoreless 8th inning. Greg Holland came in to pitch the 9th inning, getting his 34th save (27th in a row), allowing a single to Martinez, striking out Dirks, and getting Brayan Pena to hit into a game-ending double play. Eric Hosmer hit his 14th home run, a 2-run shot in the third inning. Second time this season the Royals have swept a double header on the road, the other was against Boston on April 21st, and the first time in franchise history the Royals have swept two double headers on the road in a single season AND the same pitcher, Greg Holland, getting saves in both games. What a day for the Royals!! This shows the Royals are not out of the playoff picture yet!! One game at a time, GO ROYALS!!!!
