The LA Times is hiring a national reporter wholl be based in Phoenix. Here are the details... The National desk is seeking a correspondent to cover the Southwest states out of Arizona, with a heavy emphasis on immigration and the border with Mexico. This position is one of The Times’ signature assignments, following the multifaceted issue of immigration reform, border enforcement and demographic change along some of the nation’s most heavily impacted front lines. It calls for an imaginative reporter who can explore characters and policy in one of our politically quirkiest states and write knowledgeably about booming job growth across the Southwest. This reporter should be an expert on immigration policy who can turn that expertise into moving stories about how families, cities and cultures are being upended by the continuing uncertainty over who can be called an American. As a national correspondent, the Arizona reporter will roam the Southwest and will sometimes be called to deploy on major breaking stories around the country, so flexibility and resourcefulness is a must. Travel is frequent. The successful applicant will be able to propose and deliver a regular menu of daily coverage and fast-paced web stories as well as well-crafted narrative and analysis. Digital fluency is essential. National reporters live like no others in the world of 24-hour deadlines and rapid-fire news updates and explainers for the web. Expect to travel equipped with an iPhone camera and produce short, ready-to-run videos and blog posts in your car. Be fluent enough in social media to find and build an audience for your stories.
