The Laker freshmen traveled to Rolla Monday night for their third game in 7 days. Unfazed by the frequency (and intensity) of these contests, Camdenton defeated the Bulldogs 46-28. After the teams traded possessions to start the game, defensive end Todd Simpson sacked the Rolla QB to force a punt which wide receiver Jake Hill caught at his own 22. He outraced the coverage down the left sideline for a 78-yard punt return and the games first score. Quarterback Isaiah Lumley passed to slotback Jackson Ezard for 2, giving the Lakers an early 8-0 lead. Rolla got good field position from their kickoff return unit and finished their 3rd drive of the night with a 2-yard TD. They passed successfully for two and we had a tie ballgame at the end of the first quarter, 8-8. Undaunted, the Lakers continued their attack of the Bulldog edge players, pounding away with the outside power. Following fullback Bo Shores pancake block, Simpson went off left tackle & broke to the outside, sprinting 50 yards for an apparent score. But a good block by Hill was judged a clip and back it came. Several carries later, Simpson broke a tackle at the line, veered left, stiff-armed a defender and went the final 18 yards for a touchdown. On the point after, Lumley rolled right and showed his touch, floating a perfectly-timed pass over the outstretched arms of a defender to TE Jesse Walker in the back of the end zone. 16-8 Lakers at the 7:09 mark of the 2nd quarter. On the next defensive series, Ezard jarred the ball loose from a Rolla runner and Shore recovered at the Bulldog 27. On the next play, tailback Jay Griffin busted up the middle, then broke left, outracing the secondary to the goal line. For the extra point, Lumley did his best Johnny Football impression. He rolled left, reversed field, broke a tackle and found Hill on the far side of the end zone for a 24-8 lead less than 90 seconds later. On the ensuing kickoff, defensive back Conner Graves hustled downfield and hit the return man who was bending to pick the ball up off the turf. Linebacker Winton Neal pounced on the fumble and the Lakers were back in business at the Bulldog 25. A few plays later, Lumley, on the run, zipped a pass to Hill who turned and ran 7 yards into the end zone. The conversion pass failed and it was 30-8 with 4:37 left in the half. The Laker defense forced another punt which Hill caught at his own 45. He broke left, juked two defenders, shed a tackle and sauntered in for a backbreaking score. Ezard ran in the conversion on a trap and Camdenton led by 30 with 2:23 to play in the second stanza. Rolla mounted a drive but defensive lineman Charlie Eblen sacked the Bulldog QB and Simpson forced a fumble which the refs ruled an incomplete pass. Hill stopped the Rolla runner short, though, as time expired in the first half with the Lakers holding a 38-8 advantage. The first Camdenton drive of the second half went nowhere and the Laker D held the hosts, taking over on downs at midfield. Simpson toted the rock several consecutive times, punishing would-be tacklers along the way. He accelerated into a Bulldog defender at the goal line, bowling over him on his way to pay dirt. Cory Eskridge jetted around right end on a sweep and went in untouched on the conversion attempt to push the score to 46-8 with 2:03 to play in the 3rd quarter. Camdentons Alex Amsberg had several good plays on both sides of the ball but the Lakers were unable to muster any significant offense and the reserve defense surrendered 3 TDs in the final quarter for a 46-28 final. The freshmen are now averaging over 40 points a game and are only giving up an average of 11 points per contest. The starting defensive unit has only surrendered 3 TDs all season. The 7-0 Lakers are set for a 2-game home stand as Waynesville and Columbia Rock Bridge come to the JOD on the next 2 Mondays (10/06 & 10/13). They conclude their season at Glendale on 10/20.
