The Law of Moses The law as given to the nation of Israel by Moses consisted of three parts. The ceremonial, judicial, and the moral Laws. Now this legal dispensation had an end, that is, that economy which was administered by Moses etc. the gospel in the old testament was veiled in types and figures, which economy was to be done away with, and was to come to an end when the anti-type, the Messiah came, He did come and has fulfilled the types under the Old Testament. 1. The ceremonial law, which had to do with the ecclesiastical state of Jews as appertaining to their priests, sacrifices, feasts and so on. All these things pictured and pointed to the good things to come by Christ; who was their fulfilling end, and in whom they had their accomplishment. Christ said “the things concerning me have an end.” Luke 22:37. That is He fulfilled them. See Gen. 3:15; Isa. 53:12; Dan. 9:25-26 2. The judicial law, this appertains to the political state of the Jews or their civil government. This had to do with statutes and judgment given to the nation of Israel, and according to which their judges were to make their judgment in passing out their sentences. See Deut. 16:18; 19:18. Note: the nation of Israel was a Theocracy and was immediately under God who gave them laws to govern that nation, nor where they permitted to make any new laws apart from God’s giving it. See Lev.24:12; Num. 15:34. Note: The judicial law given to the nation of Israel was to cease, and did cease, when Christ came; it ceased legally at the cross, but in reality in 70 A.D. with the destruction of Jerusalem. See Gen.49:10; Dan.9: 26-27. 3. The moral law, the Decalogue or ten commandments was given to the nation of Israel, and was to them as a distinguishing favor to the Jews. Deut. 4:6-8; 147:19-20; Rom. 9:4 Note the preface of the ten commandment Ex. 20:2. It can be said literally only of the Jews, that God “brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.” Note: The form of administration of the law as in the hands of Moses has ceased (not the moral matter of it) nor are we bidden to hear him; the law is now in the hands of Christ I Cor. 9:21and we are bidden to hear Him. Matt.17:5; Deut. 18:15. 4. The Mosaic economy or the Old Testament legal dispensation being come to an end; the dispensation of grace as by Christ is come, and the law is now in His hands, whose law it is, and who has fulfilled it commandments on behalf of His people. “Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.” Rom.10:4; II Cor.5:21; Deut. 10:5. 5. Christ has reduced both tables of the law to two main points, love to God and love to one’s neighbor, Matt.22:36-40. Note the positive format of the law in Christ’s hands, as compared to the negative in the Old Testament; if you do the positive the negative will automatically fall into place. That is if you love your neighbor, you won’t murder him or commit adulatory with his wife etc. Note: This law of love is eternal and is binding on all people. Romans 13: 8-10
