This one year marker has blind sided me no matter how I tried to prepare, make it meaningful, create ceremony and focus for his siblings and and extended family. I have been just devastated. I just miss him so much. it is just so painful as one of his siblings recently stated simply. Simply it is just so painful to not be able to talk to him on this plane. Missing his voice it is just so painful to listen to him crone one of his original songs. Painful to look into those fathomless brown eyes in one of the many photos that are still found on every corner of every one of our homes. Who of us would choose these gifts of life, this mystery of death. And yet, it is true I am so grateful for the resources I have. The community, the understanding mate and incredible children and grandchildren that surround me with such love and wisdom and beauty. This is the moment when the thought comes, how Sky would be loving us, loving each and everyone of us in all his many communities for our undertakings, creativity, tenacity. Those Sky hugs. That humor and depth. His own tenacity is missed, longed for, eternal wonder. It was year ago around this time when planet earth was still reeling, reaching for stability after such a loss that I received this letter from Cabrillo College. The community there had established the “La’akea Sky Smith Sustainability Scholarship” In the words of the Sustainability Council “ Our Club and Cabrillo College have benefited greatly from Sk’s past leadership as president of the Sustainability Council, and we think it most fitting to remember him at this college with a scholarship in his name, specifically with a scholarship that would encourage a student to engage as actively and passionately in environmentalism as Sky did. Sky’s contribution to Cabrillo sustainability must not be forgotten nor allowed to fade. Our efforts to bring Cabrillo College to completely sustainable practices and to zero wast continue, and the degree to which we’ve come closer to that goal in the past few years is due in large part to Sky.” … a non endowed $2000 scholarship was formed and an anonymous donor helped start this scholarship with an initial $500 donation last year 2013. It is my understanding that this donor is offering the $500 for a total of 4 years to establish the scholarship. Last year I was inspired to up the Scholarship amount to $1000. The funds raised with go at least 2 students who meet the requirements. All donations need to be in to the college by the end of the year to be able to be distributed to the students granted this scholarship in the spring of 2015. If you would like to participate in this scholarship please follow instructions at the top of this post. Mahalo
