The Mighty Vagus Nerve :) Stop beating yourself up about not having the nerve or guts to speak up. Speaking in public is difficult for just about everyone. Per a national survey, people would rather die than deliver a speech on death. I enrolled in a speech class at a local community college to get over that fear. My classmates took the class because it was a requirement, they thought I was NUTS to do it on purpose. It helped boost my confidence but learning about the vagus nerve released the fear. I now know why the pounding heart, sweaty palms, etc show up. When we are nervous or fearful about a situation, our vagus nerve has become disengaged. This nerve runs from the top of the spinal cord and wanders to the belly. It transmits messages about our sense of safety. Taking deep breaths re-engages the nerve and turns on the para-symphatetic nervous system. The vagus nerve is constantly sweeping the body for repair. It is connected to oxytocin receptors, the love hormone. This is why meditation and yoga are so effective. Now that you know the why you can stop beating yourself up. SatNam
