The Mission Continues In an article entitled, “Can Service Save Us?” Time Magazine paid tribute to the powerful program “The Mission Continues” which provides a platform for veterans to serve their communities and thereby heal and reintegrate themselves into society in a productive and fulfilling way. Since the programs initiation in 2007, it has helped thousands of veterans find a way out of the sometimes dark transition from military service to civilian life. Individual testimonials recount men who came back and were overwhelmed by depression, hopelessness, and even suicidal thoughts. Recent studies confirm good results of the program which has helped many of these individuals restore their lives and find a sense of purpose and camaraderie. According to the Time Magazine article, “After a six-month fellowship: 86% of the fellows reported a positive life-changing experience, 71% went on to further their education, and 86% said the program helped them transfer their military skills to civilian employment. This is especially impressive, given that 52% of those studied had suffered traumatic brain injuries and 64% had been diagnosed with post traumatic stress. “ So many of us, not only veterans, could use the healing and sense of purpose that flows to us when we find a way to give of ourselves to make a positive difference in this world. Today in appreciation of the hundreds of thousands of veterans who have dedicated themselves in service, may we all find a way to give back by paying it forward with an act of service which not only benefits the world but ourselves as well.
