The Mississippi Senate today approved a ballot measure to express - TopicsExpress

The Mississippi Senate today approved a ballot measure to express support for strong public schools and emphasize results for students. House Concurrent Resolution 9 passed a day after the House of Representatives approved the measure. The initiative will be on the Nov. 3 ballot. The bill we passed today is about funding public schools and getting results for our students. The legislative ballot initiative offers a strong focus on funding public schools and demanding positive outcomes from the classroom. Under this proposal, the Constitution would require an effective public school system. Schools that are effective are educating students and preparing them for the workforce or college. Our children deserve nothing less. HCR 9 is the legislative alternative to Initiative 42, which could result in chancery judges determining school funding. The alternative would amend Section 201 of the state Constitution to read: “The Legislature shall, by general law, provide for the establishment, maintenance and support of an effective system of free public schools.”
