The Mole as Alternate History The Mole is a different take on a large category of fiction that is called alternate or alternative history. These works explore what the world would be like if certain historical events had simply not happened, or happened very differently. What if Roosevelt lost his third term election and Lindbergh was elected president (Phillip Roth’s The Plot Against America)? What if the Nazis triumphed over all of Europe (Robert Harris’s Fatherland)? Anther branch of alternative history includes science fiction and fantasy writing that involves time travel or the invention of unique worlds. But in The Mole, the events of the Cold War remain exactly as they actually occurred, yet the causes of many of these events, the reasons why they happened the way they did, are altered. Winston Bates turns out to have a decisive and perhaps unfortunate effect on history as he tunnels his way though the last half of the 20th century.
