The National Weather Service is predicting that severe weather could occur intermittently again this afternoon and evening in central Alabama, including The University of Alabama. Tornadoes, damaging winds, hail, rain and lightning are possible. Because of the threat of severe weather, exams originally scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. today have been cancelled. Exams that have been cancelled will be made up on the following days and times: The exam originally scheduled for Monday, 7 p.m. will be made up on Friday, May 2 at 3:30 p.m. The exam originally scheduled for today at 3:30 will be made up on Saturday, May 3 at 8 a.m. The exam originally scheduled for today at 7 p.m. will be made up on Friday, May 2 at 7 p.m. Faculty have been asked to work with individual students who are not able to travel safely to campus to take an exam. Graduating seniors should work with their faculty to schedule and complete necessary exams. If necessary, graduating seniors can choose to participate in any of the commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 2 or Saturday, May 3. Since severe weather can develop quickly and without warning, please identify areas of safe refuge and be prepared to quickly move to safety if severe weather occurs. Please be familiar with UA’s severe weather guidelines and stay tuned to local weather sources as long as the potential for severe weather lasts. Persons traveling outside the UA area should monitor weather conditions to and from their destination. Gorgas Library and the UA Rec Center are available to students, faculty and staff who feel safer on campus than in their off-campus apartments. Students should seek shelter at these locations prior to a tornado warning being issued. After a warning has been issued, students should avoid traveling and seek the best available refuge area. The University’s emergency preparedness group will continue to monitor weather reports. If needed, updated information will be available on the UA website at ua.edu, through local radio and television stations, and via UA Alerts text and email alerts.
