The North Dakota Department of Health will address the state of immunization in North Dakota in an upcoming conference. The 2014 North Dakota State Immunization Conference on July 15-16 will cover topics like increasing immunization rates, vaccine storage and handling, vaccine-preventable diseases in North Dakota and updated vaccine recommendations. This is the third conference the department has held. It usually attracts between 200 and 300 people. This year, a main focus will be trying to increase immunization rates. In particular, there is a keynote presentation on the low human papillomavirus, or HPV, vaccination rates in the state. Only about 41 percent of girls aged 13-17, the target demographic, are vaccinated. The HPV vaccine can help prevent cervical cancer. Additionally, the conference will be looking at the falling immunization rates among incoming kindergartners, as well as how providers can talk to parents about vaccines. bismarcktribune/news/state-and-regional/health-department-watching-immunization-rates/article_4213fed6-f347-11e3-bb12-001a4bcf887a.html
