The Northridge Earthquake. Northridge, California. January 17, 1994. We lived just 2 blocks from Northridge Fashion Center, the epicenter of the 8.7 quake. My son, Mac, had turned 5 years old the previous October. He had his own room, and a 25 inch TV on a desk across from his bed. Dennis the Menace came out on VCR video tape the day before. Mac insisted on watching it in bed with us, and we all fell asleep together. When the quake struck in the morning, I wanted to survey the damage, but couldnt get out of the master bedroom due to debris and the twisted door jamb. I had to exit the sliding glass door to the backyard and enter the house through the front door. I walked into Macs room and beheld a vision that horrified me! I still recall the television completely crushing Macs bed, resting on his pillow. When I regained my wits I was indifferent to the destruction around me. Dennis the Menace had saved my sons life.
