The Oregon Public Safety Academy is hosting a free Leadership, Accountability, Culture, and Knowledge (LACK) class on December 9, 2014 from 0800-1200 in Salem. The deadline for registration is November 23, 2014. Course Description: Is your department on the path to a LODD? This compelling presentation by the National Fallen Firefighter Foundations examines the root causes of LODDs and the role of Leadership, Accountability, Culture and Knowledge as it influences the end result. Many fire departments across the United States LACK the Right Stuff to prevent them from being on a path to a line of duty death, with Leadership, Accountability, Culture and Knowledge being the elements that need to be addressed and managed in those environments. Through education and training, those departments can improve their survivability by understanding the root causes of firefighter fatalities and tackling these four elements with special emphasis on understanding fire service culture Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: * Feel the impact that a line of duty death has on the family, the department, and the community. * Recognize how cultural traditions and behaviors, reinforcement of unsafe behaviors, safety policies, and the acceptability of accidental success contribute to injuries and deaths. * Understand what changes in leadership, accountability, culture, and knowledge can be made to help prevent LODDs. * Apply leadership, accountability, culture and knowledge to the root causes of firefighter fatalities and learn to develop strategies to eliminate the preventable causes of LODDs. * Understand the 16 Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives and their relationship to LODD prevention. * Create a plan of action to implement the actions recommended in the module to bring about change and take the department off the path to an LODD.
