“The Pleasure Paradox” “When something good becomes a god, the pleasure it brings dies in the process. Pleasure has this unique trait: the more intensely you chase it, the less likely you are to catch it. Philosophers call this the “Hedonistic Paradox”. The idea is that pleasure, pursued for its own sake, evaporates before our eyes. …. Instead of satisfaction, you experience emptiness and an almost immediate hunger for something more. Instead of closeness and intimacy, you experience a strange sense of something that feels like loneliness.” (Idleman –“gods at war” p.99) Idleman used the story of Amnon and Tamar to illustrate this point. One of the saddest and most tragic stories in the Bible and it was driven by a person who allowed a fantasy to fill his heart till he was sick with lust. When the lust was satisfied it left emptiness and a devastating effect on the lives of those in the king’s house and eventually to the nation of Israel. (Tgore – 4/25/14)
