The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) have been trying to engage the South African Police Service over the challenges faced by workers employed under the Public Service Act in vain. The employer has failed to respond to the demands handed over to them on the 29th and 30th May and 07th June in all provinces. This has left us no choice but to resolve on a NATIONAL MARCH action to the Offices of the National Commissioner in Pretoria on the 29 of August 2013. The union resolved on this action after a resounding mandate from members who are desperate for salary upgrades. POPCRU is demanding on behalf of these workers that the employer should implements an agreement signed in 2011 at the SSSBC which states that Public Service Act employees should be translated into the SAPS Act to ensure that they are eligible for vast benefits currently enjoyed by their colleagues in uniform. We will also be marching for the implementation of the Department of Public Service and Administration Directive issued on 12 December 2012, making reference to the previous Ministerial Directives issued in 2004 and 2011 respectively. According to the directive, SAPS must upgrade all Administrative Staff who are currently between levels 1-4 to level 5 and move those in Supervisory posts to Level 7. The SAPS has repeatedly refused to honour this order from the DPSA. POPCRU therefore calls upon all its members employed under the PSA at SAPS to get ready for the march planned for the 29 August 2013 as we intensify our action against the arrogant SAPS management.
