The Portico Group and American Alliance of Museums invite you to a special session of zoo and museum friends in dialogue. Collaborate to Innovate: What Museums can Learn from Zoos will highlight lively and insightful dialogue among twelve peer institutions west of the Rockies. The session takes place Tuesday May 20, 10:15-11:30 at the Washington State Convention Center. In early 2014 The Portico Group hosted a group of west coast professionals from the museum, zoo and aquarium fields. We gathered in the spirit of collaboration and cross-pollination to discuss what different types of institutions, all focused on free-choice learning, informal education, conservation and family engagement can learn from each other. The conversation included “starter questions” about how the various organizations see themselves and their colleagues, and proceeded into moderated open discussion about innovation, experimentation, and changing expectations for the visitor experience. The live panel session will present captured excerpt, emergent motifs and important take-aways. Special thanks to our participating institutions: Woodland Park Zoo, Seattle, WA; Museum of Glass, Tacoma, WA; Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI), Seattle, WA; Happy Hollow Park & Zoo, San Jose, CA; The Palo Alto Junior Museum and Zoo, Palo Alto, CA; Portland Childrens Museum, Portland, OR; KidsQuest, Bellevue, WA; Seattle Aquarium, Seattle, WA; Natural History Museum of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT; Salt Lake City Arts Council; The Tech Museum of Innovation, San Jose, CA; EMP Museum, Seattle, WA.
