The Power of Words By Les D. Crause Isa 54:17 No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgement you shall condemn. There is an old saying that we use that goes something like this: "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never harm me." Unfortunately, like most other saying that we use without thinking, it is not true. Words are perhaps the most powerful and damaging force known to man. Because of words people have been known to kill each other. Words have started wars and battles. Words have separated friends, and caused marriages to break up. It was words that caused Eve to disobey God and partake of the forbidden fruit. It was words that caused Adam to also eat of the fruit, and bring a curse into this world. Words are a powerful tool that can be used for evil or good. And when they are applied accurately they become a weapon in the hands of the one who send them forth. It is the enemy of our souls that causes man to rise up against man, using the power of words to destroy. But this passage tells us that we do not have to accept the destruction that words can cause. We do not have to accept the attack that comes against us, but we can rise up against it. The weapon that is formed against us will not prosper when we counteract it correctly. And how do we do that? Of course we do it by using the same thing - words. You see it is the words of others spoken against us that license Satan to destroy and attack us. It is the words of condemnation, judgement and anger that open the door. But we are told that we can condemn each and every tongue that rises up against us in judgement. We have the right to do this. But we never have the right to fight fire with fire. We never have the right to counteract a curse with another curse. In the New Testament we are told to bless and curse not. So here is how you overcome the weapon that is formed against you. You do it by shining the light to dispel the darkness. You do it by speaking words of blessing instead of cursing. You bless those who persecute you and despitefully use you. You bless those who are cursing you. When you do this, you condemn the words that they have spoken against you and you neutralize their power. Then the weapon that was formed against you through the words of others is made ineffective. It cannot prosper!
