The Progress of spring is a poem by Lord Alfred Tennyson The Progress of spring is a poem by Lord Alfred Tennyson which I would like to quote two lines: “And in her open palm a halcyon sits Patient--the secret splendour of the brooks.” This is of course a reference to “Surely one of the most beautiful birds in Britain.” This time a quote from a book, (which has been my inspiration and bible.) The book and the bird are called “The Kingfisher.” Written by Rosemary Eastman and published in 1969. Rosemary was married in 1964 to Ronald Eastman. The benefit from this union pioneered kingfisher filming, photography and understanding. Ronald was born in Whitchurch in Hampshire, where the couple lived. Their home was a mill literally above the river Test. In 1967 the BBC started to transmit colour television. The first film ever to be broadcast in colour was Ronald and Rosemary’s wildlife film, called “the private life of the kingfisher.” This was shown as part of the BBC’s Look programme. The demand by the public for this film was so great it was repeated eight times. While at the Moscow Film Festival in 1967 the production won the silver medal. On the 27th May 1984 saw the release of a wonderful kingfisher documentary film, called, “secret splendour of the brooks.” Produced for Royal society for the protection of birds.
