The Prophet (saw) said, "He is not one of us who does not show compassion to our little ones and recognize the rights of our elders." (Reported by Ahmad) How far removed from this advice, is the society we live in today? Earlier this week a two year old boy Keanu Williams, was beaten to death after months of abuse from his ‘monster’ mother. He had 37 injuries including bite marks, a fractured skull and a fist-sized tear in his stomach. This horrific story and others like them, brings home to us that motherhood and the care and compassion we should have towards children is such an important aspect of a healthy functioning society. Islam bestows great value upon the position of motherhood and gives great importance to her duty as the nurturer and educator of children and the future generation. She does not view her children as a burden or a possession which she can treat as she wishes. Rather children are a trust from Allah swt. This viewpoint towards motherhood in Islam created a society that produced children who grew up to be exemplary figures, such as the great scholar Imam Shafi and Umar ibn ‘Abd al-’Aziz (radhiallahu anhu), the fifth of the khulafa’ al-rashidun.
