The Providence Journal endorses voting YES to Questions 1 and 2 on Tuesday, November 4th: that’s exactly what a revitalized Newport casino would offer: a fun outing that is part of the wealth of tourist activities Newport has to offer.... The new owners would spend an additional $40 million to turn the existing shed-like facility into a Beaux Arts-style “boutique” casino, including a spa and a concert hall..... The existing facility has suffered a precipitous drop in business in recent years, and tax revenues and jobs are at serious risk without the change. But the developers will not go forward unless table games such as blackjack and roulette, now banned, are part of the picture. We urge voters on Nov. 4 to support table games at the Newport casino. (A second ballot question makes sure that the casino cannot be relocated without city approval in a referendum; that merits a yes, too.) It’s a better idea to stay competitive than to lose millions of dollars.
