The Rehabilitation and Community-based Poverty Reduction Project (RCPRP), Sierra Leone has been named this year’s winner of the IFAD Gender Award for West and Central Africa. Breaking the news, the Lead Technical Specialist (Gender and Social Inclusion) at the Policy and Technical Advisory Division, IFAD – Rome, Clare Bishop-Sambrook informed the IFAD Director for West and Central Africa Division, Ides De Willebois that the Rehabilitation and Community-based Poverty Reduction Project, Sierra Leone is this year’s winner of the IFAD Gender Award in WCA. In her compliments to the RCPRP team, the newly appointed IFAD Country Portfolio Manager for Sierra Leone, Ndaya Beltchika described the news as ‘TERRIFIC’ and disclosed that she was thrilled of the realization of “RCPRP being the recipient of this year’s IFAD Gender Award in West and Central Africa Division”. In-country, the news was made public by the IFAD Country Officer, Mariatu Kamara during a Saturday session of the Project’s Radio Talk Show programme ‘Inside De Farm”. During the programme which was meant to introduce her to the radio listening public, the IFAD Country Officer explained the relationship existing between IFAD and the Government of Sierra Leone; the rationale behind the establishment of a country office while showering praises on the NPCU for their outstanding performance, which she noted had put feathers on her cap. In his response, the National Programme Coordinator of the IFAD funded RCPRP, Sierra Leone, Mohamed Tejan-Kella expressed thus: “It is with the deepest sense of gratitude that we wish to accept the news of the Rehabilitation and Community-based Poverty Reduction Project (RCPRP), Sierra Leone as this year’s winner of the IFAD Gender Award in WCA”. Speaking on the timing of the news, the RCPRP Programme Coordinator further stated thus: “It came at no better moment than a time when the nation is facing with the challenge of the deadly Ebola virus. This laurel will serve as a sign of hope to the nation, amidst the struggle with the Ebola virus. We therefore dedicate this achievement not only to the staff and beneficiaries of the RCPRP, but to all those who in diverse ways are contributing in addressing gender inequalities and women empowerment”.
