The Rev. Dr. Katharine Rhodes Henderson, president of Auburn, released the following statement in remembrance of the 50th anniversary of the bombing of the Sixth Avenue Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, which killed four African-American girls: “We honor the four innocent African-American girls killed 50 years ago by a bomb set off by a white Klansman in the basement of a Birmingham, Ala. Church. We are reminded of the gruesome and horrific acts that hate, fear, and misunderstanding can cause. Just three weeks after the 1963 March on Washington, that tragic event signaled clearly that Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream was nowhere near a reality. There is no rest on the journey to justice." “The day Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, Addie Mae Collins and Denise McNair were killed, the Sunday school Bible lesson came from Matthew: ‘For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.’ As Dr. King knew, when we turn our cheek away from retaliation and revenge, we turn our spirits to spreading the seeds of understanding, acceptance and love." “Our journey must continue. From ongoing threats of violence and racial profiling, to the increased likelihood they won’t even have enough food to eat, African-American children still do not have the justice Dr. King sought. We must end the economic injustice, racial injustice and hate that continue to hurt so many children.” auburnseminary.org/whatshappening/birmingham-bombing-anniversary
