.... The Romans departure from Britain was preceded by the usual signs that a long-term deterioration of the climate was imminent. But surely the civilization and culture which they left behind could have persisted overtly for some time thereafter? The explanation for the disappearance of the way of life has been suggested by features common to the Romano-British towns excavated so far: garbage piled up in the town squares to the height of the roof ridges or higher. That process took 2 years maximum. Lebanese sponge traders brought cargo to Britain by boat in the second year after the Romans departure, but thereafter there is very little known to about commerce and such like. The sudden abandonment of the towns was followed by the sudden abandonment of the Villas. There isnt any specific evidence of which I am aware to suggest that the Lebanese sponge boats brought rats with plague or other epidemic, accidently, or intentionally ...... but would the Romans refrain from trying to exterminate the place in their wake? Im still betting that the German gendarmes tried to keep the remnants of Romano-Britain existent and provided armed immigration control at the beaches ...... the correspondence discovered suggests that it was common for them to feel obligated to uphold their individual contracts with the British side of the administration. The Saxons mostly attacked the Roman military installations, understandably. The Irish were Druidic and probably attacked just about everything there, with the possible exception of the surviving British Druids, who had certainly established and maintained communications with the Irish Druids during their centuries of resistance to the Roman occupation. Whom are you going to convict in the midst of the free-for-all which erupted in the wake of the Romans departure? Id bet its the Romans themselves!
