The Russian takeover of Crimea was wrong. However, Foreign Affairs Minister Baird grossly distorted things when he said that the Crimean people were given a choice between yes and yes on the referendum, and Ezra Levant failed shamefully in his duty as an interviewer in not challenging him on it. The people of Crimea were given a choice between joining Russia and returning to their old 1992 Constitution, which would essentially have meant autonomy for Crimea with a tenuous link to Ukraine. It was absolutely disgraceful that the status quo, remaining an autonomous republic of Ukraine with essentially the same powers as any Ukrainian oblast, was not an option on the ballot, especially since the evidence suggests that union with Russia would still have garnered an overwhelming majority of the votes. But it is a shameful lie to say as Mr. Baird did, that the Crimean voters were given no choice at all. Also, lets remember that over 80% voted, and only about 1% spoiled their ballots.
