The Sharif Brothers find it politically easier to focus on solving Karachi’s crime problem rather than solving the terrorism problem that emanates from Punjab, because the political price of carrying out an action to root out terrorists in Punjab is high whereas doing an action in Karachi will have little if any political price (in Punjab) for PML-N. Solving Karachi’s crime is great but the terrorism problem of Punjab remains. What needs to happen is a trade-off. In the absence of real political leadership and courage I propose a political “wattah-sattah”: PPP, MQM and ANP need to be given the power to decide (and execute) what to do with the terrorist havens of the Lashkars and the Punjabi Taliban which have been allowed to proliferate in Punjab. The political price (in Sind and KPK) for PPP, MQM and ANP for conducting an indiscriminate action in Punjab using paramilitary forces of Sind and KPK is nil hence we can expect the elimination of the Lashkars and the menace of the Punjabi Taliban. Destroying the PPP, MQM and ANP affiliated criminal gangs is as important as destroying the terrorists that form the Lashkars and the Taliban.
