The Shema and its related blessings remain the same every day of the year. There are no special additions to the Shema or to its blessings on Shabbat or on any other special days in the Jewish calendar. Although such additions are made throughout the Jewish world, they are based on post-Talmudic custom. The only special additions to be made to the text of the Shema is when reciting Shema in the context of a minyan. The text presented before you here should only be used when praying without a minyan. One should wash his hands before reciting Shema and its associated blessings, in the same manner that one should wash before praying the Standing Prayer. This is true even if one will be unable to pray the Standing Prayer after reciting Shema and its associated blessings. However, unlike failing to wash hands before the obligatory Standing Prayers, one who transgressed and did not wash his hands before reciting Shema and its blessings still fulfills his obligation and should not recite the Shema with its blessings again. The morning Standing Prayer (Amida) should be recited immediately following completing the Shema recitation and its associated blessings. However, if one made a separation between the Shema and its associated blessings before praying the Standing Prayer, or if one did not pray the Standing Prayer, he still fulfilled his obligation to recite Shema and its associated blessings.
