The Shining, by my estimation, is the best horror/suspense film ever made. It has all of the key elements you are looking for in a movie of this genre; dread, fear, sadness, loneliness, and doom. Those 2 little girls? Nothing I have ever seen in my life is more creepy. The blood coming out from over the elevator doors and cascading into the hallway provided fuel for my nightmares for decades. The scene where we see redrum reflected on the mirror in lipstick and realize it is murder in reverse gives you actual shivers. Kubrick takes Kings source material and uses it as the framework for a tale that is far more terrifying. If Kubrick were Johnny Cash, Kings Shining would be his Hurt. So good.
