The Social Justice Council, in conjunction with the NM Faith Coalition for Immigrant Justice, invites you to a meeting this Sunday at 12:15 in the sanctuary, to discuss the possibility of becoming a sanctuary supporting congregation. Churches have provided sanctuary since biblical times, more recently in the 80s when people were fleeing violence in Central American countries, and today to protect certain immigrants facing final deportation orders, whose families would be broken apart. The most recent wave of congregations offering and supporting sanctuary has stemmed from the inaction of Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform—it is one way to show our moral commitment to welcome the stranger when legislative avenues have failed. Come and hear what would it would be like, as First Unitarian considers joining this movement.
